Frequently Asked Questions
What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy and counselling are both forms of ‘talking therapies’, which can help with a wide variety of difficult issues in life.
These can range from anxiety, depression, childhood trauma and eating disorders through self-harm, relationships and phobias through to panic attacks, anger management and end-of-life preparations.
A safe, nurturing, confidential and non-judgmental space is provided for you to discuss your personal issues with a qualified and experienced therapist over 50-minute sessions. The aim is to arrive at a clearer understanding of the self, to remove ‘blocks’ and to find strategies that will help you navigate life more easily.
What should I expect in my first session?
It’s vital that you feel comfortable with your therapist, so I offer a discounted and no-obligation first session.
Therapy sessions last for 50 minutes for one-to-one sessions or 90 minutes for couples, families and groups.
In the therapy room, we sit comfortably and discuss the issues that we need to.
How long does therapy last?
Some issues can be resolved within a couple of sessions, but most people benefit from a longer bloc of sessions, typically eight to ten weeks or longer.
What is couples therapy?
Many couples start therapy to address issues that have surfaced in their relationship, but in other cases couples use therapy as ‘maintenance’, without waiting for problems to occur.
Should I go for one-to-one sessions or groupwork?
One-to-one sessions are best suited to the exploration of deep-seated personal issues such as trauma, abuse and other very specific presenting problems, whereas groupwork is appropriate for those who would like to work more generally on their self-knowledge in a supportive and facilitated small-group environment.
Where is your practice?
My practice is based across two sites, at Alexandra House in Burslem (Stoke-on-Trent) and in Alsager (Cheshire).
Are your premises fully accessible?
I’m afraid not; both sites have flights of stairs.
If you have accessibility requirements, please contact me to arrange for sessions in alternative and fully accessible venues which I will be pleased to arrange.
How much does it cost?
One-to-one sessions cost £55 (but initial sessions are discounted); couples and family sessions cost £75; group sessions generally cost from £160 for eight-week programmes.
What are your qualifications?
I qualified from the University of Manchester.
Is confidentiality guaranteed?
Yes – within the bounds of legality. This will be discussed at the start of sessions, and a basic contract mutually agreed.
